On This Date: It was on February 16, when Abraham Lincoln had his inauguration train stop to meet 12 year old Grace Bedell on a train platform in Westfield, NY in Chautauqua County. This fabulous statue commemorates those precious few moments and I enjoy posting about this often. In October of , then 11 year old Westfield resident Grace Bedell (who was born in Albion, NY) wrote Abe Lincoln a letter, imploring him to "grow whiskers", citing that it might help his efforts in becoming President. In the weeks that followed, Lincoln indeed grew whiskers and a beard. On February 16, while on his way from Illinois to Washington, D.C. for the inauguration, Lincoln's train stopped in Westfield and he asked for the little girl. They had a meeting there lasting just a few minutes and the rest was history. The top American scorer in U World Cup history? That would be Jozy Altidore, with five goals in when the USA beat Brazil and Uruguay enroute to a quarterfinal finish.
The USA has not won a knockout scen game at the biennial world championship since. Coach Tab Ramos said — after naming 20 of the 21 playershe’ll take to the U World Cup in New Zealand (May June 30) — that improving his offense has been focus since his team qualified in January. In hopes of finding a new Altidore, Ramos hasadded three forwards who weren’t part of the qualifying roster.
