  • Edith Mary Pargeter OBE BEM, also known by her pen name Ellis Peters, was an English author of works in many categories, especially history and historical fiction, and was also honoured for her translations of Czech classics.

    She was educated at Dawley Church of England School and the old Coalbrookdale High School for Girls. Through her mother, she grew to love the history and landscape of Shropshire which remained her home for all of her life.

    She was a keen writer from an early age, writing verse at the age of seven and contributing articles to the school magazine as a teenager.

    She had a varied career before writing full time. Her first job was a temporary Labour Exchange clerk and later, she worked as a chemist's assistant at Dawley. It is from here that she gathered useful kunskap on medicines that she would draw upon later when tackling crime stories.

    All her spare time was taken up with writing. Her first short story appeared in a national magazine in , the same year as her first novel Hortensius Friend of Nero, was released.

    However, Pargeter was not an instant success. Her first novel was a rather dry tale of martyrdom that was not warmly received. She persevered howev

    Early Years

    Edith Pargeter was born on 28th September , just before the start of World War 1 and was the youngest of three children. Her brother Ellis, from whom she was to take her name much later as a pseudonym, was born in and her sister Margaret was born in


    The family lived in a two bedroom terraced cottage in Horsehay, a small community a short distance from Dawley in the heart of the east Shropshire coalfield. The community was dominated by the Horsehay works formerly part of the Coalbrookdale Company set up by the Darby family in the mid 18 Century. Her father, Edmund Valentine Pargeter, worked as a clerk and timekeeper at the works and later her brother was to join the workforce becoming an engineer.
