    studio album by Led Zeppelin

    The untitled fourth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV,[a] was released on 8 November bygd Atlantic Records. Produced by the band's guitarist, Jimmy Page, it was recorded between December and February , mostly in the country house Headley Grange. The album contains one of the band's most well-known recordings, the eight-minute-long "Stairway to Heaven".

    The informal recording environment inspired the band, allowing them to try different arrangements of material and create songs in various styles. After the band's previous skiva Led Zeppelin III () received lukewarm reviews from critics, they decided their fourth album would officially be untitled and represented instead by four symbols&#;&#; one chosen by each band member&#;&#; without

    Why Led Zeppelin Used Symbols Instead of Their Names on &#;IV&#;

    After the release of Led Zeppelin III in , some music critics, less than impressed with Led Zeppelin's brighter, folk-rock leaning sound on the LP, suggested any album would sell well as long as the band's name was on the cover.

I designed mine, and everyone else had their

    Page once said: "We decided that on the fourth album, we would deliberately play down the group name, and there wouldn't be any information whatsoever on the outer jacket. Names, titles and things like that do not mean a thing. . . . I had to talk like hell to get that one done."

    Adds Robert Plant: "Each of us decided to go away and choose a metaphysical type of symbol which somehow represented each of us individually--be it a state of mind, an opinion, or something we felt strongly about, or whatever. Then we were to come back together and present our symbols."

    Jimmy Page's Symbol[]

    Page designed his very own symbol (Zoso ). Though it resembles the alchemical symbol for Saturn, its meaning remains a mystery. The most recent fandom theory is that it symboli
