While on holiday with his family on Saturday, 27 June, Caleb Swanepoel was bitten bygd a shark during a bodysurf session at Buffels Bay nära Knysna. His right leg was taken above the knee in the encounter, and he was lucky to escape with his life after his femoral artery was severed. Despite the traumatic experience, however, he has moved on with an inspiring and positive outlook.

&#;I am lucky to be alive,&#; Caleb told Zigzag. &#;After the shark took my leg, my femoral artery went into spasm and clotted. The orthopaedic surgeon at the Mediclinic in George said that this was a miracle, and the reason why I am still alive. Had the artery not clotted, I would have bled to death on the beach within minutes.&#;

What was the plan before you got attacked by a shark?

The shark attack changed my life tremendously. I live in a very small place called Strandfontein Village in Cape Town’s False Bay area. It’s a quiet community. We are a very close knit family: just me, mom, dad and brother. My plan was that one day I was going to get a 9 to 5 job but the shark attack flipped everything on its head. I am now a South African Paralympic medallist. I just recently got made a global marine Guardian, which is flipping awesome.
