    ​TICHBORNE, CHIDIOCK (1558?–1586), conspirator, born at Southampton about 1558, was the son of Peter Tichborne bygd his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Middleton. This branch of the family traced descent from Roger de Ticheburne, knight in Henry II's reign, through Henry, younger son of John Tichborne, sheriff of Hampshire in 1488, and great-grandfather of Sir Benjamin, the first baronet (d. 1629) (see the elaborate pedigree in Harl. MS. 5800 ad fin.) Both Chidiock and his father were ardent papists, and were in connection with the king of Spain and other enemies of the English government abroad.     The Recusant Legend: Chideock Tichborne

    Chideock Tichborne was an relaterat till elizabethansk tid recusant who was executed for his part in the Babington plot, but his execution was universally lamented, even by the most aggressively Protestant chroniclers, and watched with horror by the London crowds, usually so thirsty for blood. He wrote an elegy for his young life three days before his execution. It was published at once, in a volume of verses celebrating Queen Elizabeth's survival of the Babington plot, and it immediately became a favourite fashionable poem and a popular song. Unknown during his life, Chideock Tichborne became a hero at his death, the darling of patriotic Protestant high society.     The tragic figure of Chidiock Tichborne is famous either for his martyrdom as a devout Catholic or for being part of a terrorist plot to kill the reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth I. He had lived a short life in the 16th century practicing, along with his parents, Catholicism at a time when to do so was becoming increasingly dangerous. With the Queen having been excommunicated due to her support of the Dutch conflicts with Spain her tolerance of papists had come to an end. The fact that she saw the Catholic Mary, Queen of Scots as a direct threat to her own throne was a major factor. Tichborne made the fatal error of getting mixed up in the so-called Babington Plot. This was a group of men hell bent on killing a Queen, and it was only a matter of time before they were discovered, and they would then all suffer the grisly consequences.
