A Prince George’s County Police Department executive review panel charged a county councilwoman with reckless driving nearly two weeks after she was let off with a slap on the wrist.
Prince George’s County Councilwoman Karen Toles initially got off easy after she was pulled over going miles per hour on the Beltway. Toles was given a $90 citation for an unsafe lane change and a written warning for excessive speed.
Once word of the stop went public, the police department released a statement explaining the stop.
“The issuance of a warning citation for the speed is consistent with the typical discretion applied by police officers to speeding motorists” the statement said. “The traffic violations were captured on the police officers in-car camera, and the incident will be subject to command review. At the moment, the video is evidence in a pending District Court traffic case, and will not be released.”

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan appointed Karen Toles on Tuesday to the House of Delegates, one day before the day legislative session began in Annapolis.
“I am confident that Ms. Toles will represent the citizens of Prince George’s County well in her new role as delegate,” Hogan said in a statement. “I offer her my sincere congratulations and look forward to working with her and the General Assembly this legislative session.”
In the meantime, the former Prince George’s County Council member continues to prepare herself for an education on statewide policy and politics.
As a council member from to who represented District 7 that includes Suitland and Hillcrest Heights, she will represent the 25th Legislative District which not only incorporates those communities, but also Largo, Joint Base Andrews and parts of Upper Marlboro.

Karen Renee Toles is an American Democratic politician from Maryland. Following the resignation of State Delegate Dereck E. Davis to serve as the Treasurer of Maryland, GovernorLarry Hogan appointed her to serve the remainder of his term.[1] Since , she has served in the Maryland House of Delegates, representing district 25, based in Prince George's County.[2]
Early life
[edit]Toles was born in Prince George's County, Maryland and attended Forestville High School in Forestville, Maryland. She graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in , earning a B.S. degree in public health. She has also earned a J.D. degree from the University of Baltimore Law School.[2]
