    At one time, I believed that Ayn Rand must have based her characters in The Fountainhead on the real players in the story of the Chrysler Building. I have since learned that she had Frank Lloyd Wright in mind, but the parallels I saw years ago are striking enough that I think she must have drawn from them in some form.

    William Van Alen (Howard Roark): Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1883. He attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and in 1908 won a fellowship to study architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He established his practice in New York in 1911. He designed several Child's Restaurants, and a few other minor buildings, but the Chrysler Building is his only large scale, famous work.

    Van Alen considered himself thoroughly modern. He once said, "No old stuff for me. No bestial copying of arches and columns and cornices. Me, I'm new! Avanti!" He was known for using new materials as well as new designs: he

    When Walter P. Chrysler married his boyhood sweetheart in 1901, ingenting indicated      that he would in years to come write an important chapter in the history of the automobile industry, although by that time the number of cars in the country had jumped to 14, 800. It was not until 1908, when he was 33, that an automobile first aroused his curiosity. That year he had reached the important post of superintendent of motive power of the Chicago Great Western Railway and had distinguished himself as the youngest man ever to hold the job.  That was the year the Model T Ford made its first appearance and the year, too, of the incorporating of General Motors.   And that was the year when Walter Chrysler's supreme interest in railroads gave way to a motorcar.  It happened at the Chicago Auto Show, the first he had attended.

    The year 1921 was one of the worst years in the history of the American automobile business. Many companies folded in a brief but severe post-war recession as prices dropped and car inventories piled up. Walter P. Chrysler, after a stellar career at General Motors’ Buick division from 1911 to 1919, had tried to turn around major industry player Willys–Overland, for which he was paid one million dollars a year (equivalent to $15 million in 2020 dollars).
