  • The Prince

Of all Machiavelli's works The Prince is undoubtedly the greatest; and a new English edition of it fryst vatten likely to be welcome to all those who have not the advantage of reading it in the classical Italian original. It is customary for those who wish to gain the favour of a prince to endeavour to do so bygd offering him gifts of those things which they hold most precious, or in which they know him to take especial delight. In this way princes are often presented with horses, arms, cloth of gold, gems, and such-like ornaments worthy of their grandeur. In my desire, however, to offer to your Highness some humble testimony of my devotion, I have been unable to find among my possessions anything which I hold so dear or esteem so highly as that knowledge of the deeds of great dock which I have acquired through a long experience of modern events and a constant study of the past. The results of my long observations and reflections are recorded in the little volume which I now offer

I've been reading mention of Machiavelli's notorious The Prince for probably most of my life. "Machiavellian" as unscrupulously manipulative has long been a useful term. Nonetheless, I've never read The Prince or even had much interest in it. Unscrupulously manipulative people are common enuf in the world around me & not in the least bit likeable, I want less of them, not more of them.

  • Here is my translation into modern English of The Fable of Belfagor the Archdevil by Niccolò Machiavelli.  Machiavelli wrote his &#;Fiaba di Belfagor arcidiavolo&#; during the same time he worked on The Prince and La Mandragola, between the Spring of and , making it just about years old, today.

I have also written a stage adaptation of this story, based on this translation, where I put all of the story into the characters&#; voices. I also have a screenplay version based on the stage adaptation. I have translated this story, carefully keeping to the original text, so that it can serve as a reliable point of reference when compared to my adaptation of this story for the theater or film.
