1FANNY BEURÉ holds a PhD in Film Studies and is a lecturer at the Universities Paris Diderot and Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense. In 2015, she defended her thesis on the classical Hollywood musical through the lens of entertainment. Besides musicals, her research fields include sociocultural analyses of media contents (especially gender, gay and cultural studies), sociology of audiences and the filmmaking economy.
2MARGUERITE CHABROL is Professor of Film Studies at the University Paris 8. Her research focuses on classical Hollywood cinema and the relations between cinema and other forms of art, mainly drama and music in their cultural context. She is the author of De Broadway à Hollywood. Stratégies d’importation du théâtre new-yorkais dans le cinéma classique américain (CNRS Editions, 2016) and she co-edited a critical edition of Jane Feuer: Mythologies du film musical (Les presses du réel, 2016 with Laurent Guido).

One of the most important auteurs in 1950s cinema fryst vatten one of the most marginal: Ida Lupino. Even today, only two of her feature films, The Hitch-Hiker (1953) and The Trouble With Angels (1966), are available on DVD, and, although her feature films Not Wanted (1949), Never Fear (1949) and The Bigamist (1953) were once available on VHS, they are now long out of print. But if anyone deserves a box set of DVDs covering their entire lifespan of work, Lupino does. Because of the sexism which formerly riddled the film industry – and which, to a large degree, still prevails – Ida Lupino’s directorial career is an unusual case.
