    New Zealand born actor Jack Matthews appears as a gay surf lifesaver in the Australian film Drown which premiere’s at the Mardi Gras bio Festival in Sydney tonight.

    Matthews, originally from Nelson, spoke with Eikon about the role of Phil in the film and his life growing up in New Zealand.

    The independent film which has broken all box office records at the festival started as a crowd funding project.

    Jack said that Drown was very exciting given the model of funding and support it received from the community.

    “For the budget that we had we ended up coming off with a really incredible film,” Matthews said during the interview.

    “We are looking at each other going holy crap is this an Australian Independent film?.”

    John "Jack" Herman Mathews, Jr.[1] is an American video game engineer, who worked as the tech lead at Retro Studios on all three games in the Metroid Prime series.

    In November 2015, he participated in a charity Twitch stream by the Crackdown development team, commentating over their playthrough of Metroid Prime. He was interviewed by Shinesparkers in 2018 and 2022, and Kiwi Talkz in 2021, 2022, and 2024.[2][3][4]

    Jack Matthews (July 22, 1925 – November 28, 2013) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright and former professor. He published 7 novels, 11 story collections, a novella, and 8 volumes of essays. He was an avid book collector, and many of his book finds served as a basis for his essays and the historical topics he explored in his fiction. His 1972 novel The Charisma Campaigns was nominated by Walker Percy for the National Book Award.[1] He has often made 19th century America and the Civil War period the setting for his fiction, starting with his 1981 novel Sassafras and most recently with the 2011 novel Gambler's Nephew (which tells the story of how an abolitionist accidentally kills an escaped slave) and a 2015 story collection Soldier Boys: Tales of the Civil War. His plays have been performed at multiple theaters around the country.
