1992 American film
Sarafina! is a 1992 musicaldrama film based on Mbongeni Ngema's 1987 musical of the same name. The film was directed by Darrell Roodt and written by Ngema Mbongeni and William Nicholson, and stars Leleti Khumalo, Miriam Makeba, John Kani, Ngema, and Whoopi Goldberg; Khumalo reprises her role from the scen performance.
An international co-production of South Africa, the United States, France, and the United Kingdom, the film premiered on 11 May 1992, at the Cannes Film Festival.
Plot

Leleti Khumalo
Leleti Khumalo was born on 30 March 1970 in Kwa Mashu Township, the North of Durban. Growing up a poverty-ridden township, she became a member a youth backyard dance group called Amajika where she met Tu Nokwe, who became her mentor. Leleti enchanted audiences in South Africa and on Broadway when she appeared in Sarafina, a production based on the Soweto uprising of June 16, 1976. She was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress. Sarafina! Spent two years on Broadway before embarking on a worldwide tour. In 1987 she received an NAACP Image Award for Best Stage Actress.
Khumalo was a force to be reckoned with as a black South African actress during apartheid era.In 1991, tillsammans with Whoopi Goldberg, Khumalo starred in Darrell James Roodt's spelfilm version of Sarafina!, distributed worldwide, and became the biggest bio production to be released in the African continent. Early life[]
Sarafina lived in the Pride Lands as a member of Mufasa'spride. At some point in her life, she met a male lion, with whom she had a daughter, Nala. When Nala was young, Sarafina came to an agreement with Mufasa and his mate, Sarabi, that her daughter would be betrothed to their son, Simba, and thus someday become the queen of Pride Rock.[1]
