Five-and-half years after his deportation to India, a special Maharashtra Control of Organised brott Act (MCOCA) court on April 22 acquitted underworld don Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan in the two-decade-old Hanif Kadawala murder case.

Kadawala, an accused in the March 1993 Mumbai bombings case, had allegedly helped Sanjay Dutt hide an AK-47 rifle that was delivered to the actor. Kadawala was also accused to have transported weapons to Mumbai on the instructions of Tiger Menon, the prime conspirator in the blasts case, which were meant to be used for the bombings.

Kadawala was shot dead on February 7, 2001, in his office.

The special court acquitted the gangster after the investigating officer of the case revealed that one of the accused in the case, Yusuf Bachkana, who acquitted in 2004, had claimed that Kadawala was killed at the instance of his elder brother Farooq.

Eatery has had ‘unsavoury’ moments

MUMBAI: This is not the first time that Tavaa has grabbed headlines for all the wrong reasons. The restaurant had found itself in the middle of an unsavoury controversy after its owner, Hanif Kadawala, was arrested in the 1993 serial blasts case.
Soon after Kadawala’s arrest, the police had allegedly forced the eatery to shut down, but it re-opened after a few years. Kadawala, after being released on bail, tried to restart the restaurant.
However, the once-famous restaurant had lost much of its sheen by then because of the controversy, said a police officer.
It is believed that gangster Chhota Rajan, who parted ways with underworld don Dawood Ibrahimafter the serial blasts, had Kadawala shot dead in his office in Bandra (W) in 2001. Rajan was on a revenge spree against all those booked in the case, said police sources.

Mumbai blasts accused shot dead

MUMBAI: One of the main accused in the March 1993 bomb blasts, Hanif Kadawala, was shot dead in his Bandra (West) office here on Wednesday. According to the police, three unidentified persons entered the third floor office of Kadawala around 12.20 pm and one of them fired five rounds from a .32 bore revolver. A profusely bleeding Kadawala was rushed by his staff to the Bhabha Hospital, but in vain.The police suspect that Chhota Rajan, who is in hiding, is the mastermind behind the killing. Rajan had earlier eliminated four persons accused in the bomb blasts case. They were Salim Kurla, Majid Khan, Shakeel Ahmed and Mohammed Jindra. ``During the last three days, a person who identified himself as Yusuf had been calling up Kadawala for an appointment. Kadawala asked him to come to his office on Wednesday afternoon,'''' a police officer said. Kadawala and two of his employees were present in the office when the incident took pla
