1) Gindo Manurung was born in in North Sumatra to a farmer father and primary school headmaster mother. He had a difficult childhood where he had to work in the fields with little time for schooling or rest. 2) He continued his education through technical school, having to support himself through various jobs like teaching karate. 3) After graduating, he joined the police force in Medan after his father became injured preventing him from continuing his education. He later married and started a family with three children, which motivated him to work hard to support his family.
