Abstract
His image was larger than life, dwarfing those of Ishola Oyenusi, the King of robbers in the s and Youpelle Dakuro, the army deserter who masterminded the most vicious daylight robber in Lagos in in which two policemen were killed. Anini spear-headed a four-month reign of terror between August and December that gripped part of Nigeria. While he and his gang reigned, they killed, maimed, kidnapped, robbed, and raped their victims. The episodes were replicated with increasing sophistication, brazenness and arrogance. At the end of it all, 20 persons - 11 policemen and nine civilians were dead. Indeed, Anini's siege on Nigeria has been described as ' a nightmare' and 'a metaphor of horror.' In the early s, Anini, popularly known as ‘The Law’, carried out some of the most brutish robbery attacks in the history of Nigeria, and replicated them with increasing sophistication, brazenness, and arrogance that dwarfed the atrocities of many before him.

Lawrence Nomanyagbon Anini (c. – March 29, ) [2] was a Nigerian bandit who terrorised Benin City in the s along with his sidekick, Monday Osunbor. He was captured and executed for his crimes.
Arrest
[edit]On December 3, , he was caught at a house in Benin City between 2nd and 3rd East Circular Road in the company of a girlfriend. His girlfriend was said to have betrayed him. His friends were arrested while he was shot in the leg, transferred to a military hospital. Several days after he was shot in the leg, one of his legs was amputated.[3] The country's military leader, Ibrahim Babangida, demanded a speedy trial. Anini was convicted of most of his charges and was executed on March 29, in Benin city.[2]
