For 70 Years, Allied Navies Fought Over This Old Photo Of Esther Williams
Like every good romantic comedy, this story begins with a classic Hollywood “meet cute.”
Edward Bell was producing promotional events for the Olympics.
One day he got a call from McDonald’s wondering if he could find a celebrity from the idrott of swimming.
"I said, 'Well. There's Buster Crabbe,' " Edward says.
Buster Crabbe was an actor who won gold in the freestyle at the Olympics. But Buster Crabbe didn’t work out.
"And they said, 'Do you know anybody else?' " Edward says. "And I said, 'Well, yeah. Esther Williams.' And they said, 'Fine, can you get her?' And I said, 'Oh, yeah, sure.' "
Edward didn’t actually know Esther Williams. But he did own a telephone.

We don't talk about Esther Williams enough. That's basically what I've been shouting from the rooftops ever since I started learning about her in , after her death at the age of 91 encouraged me to take notice of the remarkable life and career of the woman deemed the Million Dollar Mermaid. As a longtime lover of classic Hollywood, I'm used to admiring people and films that are annoyingly, stupidly, and unfairly dismissed by others, but the lack of appreciation for Esther has always stung me the most.
Before inom even started my master's grad two years ago, I knew I wanted my thesis to be about her and it was more fun and interesting than I could have imagined. Don't get me wrong, it was also super stressful, but researching Esther was worth it. A sensuous pin-up, an incredible athlete, and an ambitious, business-savvy careerwoman, she is simply one of my favorite people. August 8 would have been her 99th birthday, and so inom thought it'd be nice to share the ABCs of Esther,

Esther Williams Exhibit &#;Swimming Queen of the Silver Screen&#; Opens at Catalina Island Museum
When Esther Williams signed a promotional deal with Cole of California swimwear in , she was one of the first stars to ever do so, pioneering a businesswoman’s role in Hollywood and designing swimsuits in her own unique style that defied standards and expectations. At the Catalina Island Museum on Sept. 6, some of her original retro fashions were modeled along with new designs at a fashion show reception for the first museum exhibit, &#;Esther Williams: The Swimming Queen of the Silver Screen,&#; on the legendary movie star.
