  • The Teatro Massimo Bellini is an opera house in Catania, Sicily, southern Italy. Named after the local-born composer Vincenzo Bellini, it was inaugurated on 31 May 1890 with a performance of the composer’s masterwork, Norma. It seats 1,200.

    History

    The creation of what was to finally become the Teatro Massimo Bellini took almost two hundred years, beginning with discussions following the disastrous 1693 earthquake which completely destroyed Catania. The construction of a public theatre was discussed, and a foundation stone was finally laid in 1812.
    Architect Salvatore Zahra Buda began to prepare a plan for a theatre in the Piazza Nuovaluce, in front of the Santa Maria di Nuovaluce monastery, the location of the present-day theatre. It was decided that a “Great Municipal Theatre” worthy of an expanding city should be created; the plan of the “Teatro Nuovaluce” (New Light Theatre) was a grandiose one in all respects and was conceived to create one of t

    Si tratta della collezione di una dinastia di antiquari (operante sin dal XVIII secolo), che espone a rotazione alcuni oggetti di proprietà della famiglia, come tavole dipinte a fondo oro di epoca medievale, bronzetti, sculture lignee, maioliche e robbiane, mobilio antico. È ospitata in un edificio dei primi del Novecento, con una notevole vista sull'Arno, opera di Adolfo Coppedè.

    Tra i pezzi più pregiati un affresco della scuola giottesca, una Madonna dei Della Robbia, un busto attribuito a Donatello, un ritratto di Tintoretto, un bronzetto di Giambologna, arazzi gotici e delle manifatture medicee e un armadio scolpito da Andrea Sansovino.

    Vincenzo Salvatore Carmelo Francesco Bellini was one of the most important composers of Italian opera in his time. He was born in 1801 in Catania, Sicily, to a family already steeped in music; his father and grandfather were both career musicians. He began composing before receiving any formal music education. Bellini developed a reputation for fine craftsmanship, particularly in the way he forged an intricate relationship between the music and the libretto. To perform one of his operas, singers required extremely agile voices. His abilities and talent earned him the admiration of other composers, including Berlioz, kompositör, and even Wagner, and his flowing, exquisitely sculpted vocal lines represent the epitome of the bel canto ideal.
