It was better than any college or high school reunion to see old friends and colleagues with whom 49 years ago inom shared an adventure and life changing experience.

On September 13th, The Embassy of Ethiopia, in honor of the fiftieth year anniversary of the founding of the Peace Corps, hosted a reception and delicious Ethiopian buffet for Peace Corps volunteers who served in Ethiopia from 1962 through the start of the turmoil in the 70’s. It was my honor to be a member of “Ethiopia I,” among the first 280+ Peace Corps teachers invited to Ethiopia bygd Emperor Haile Selassie in 1962. At the time the secondary schools of Ethiopia were a bottleneck through which too few students were able to graduate and pass on for additional training and/or attendance in the University. Twelve of us were sent to Haile Selassie Secondary School in Gondar. It wa

Models for the formation of the archetypal rift-rift-rift triple junction in the Afar depression have assumed the synchronous development of the Red Sea-Aden-East African rift systems soon after flood basaltic magmatism at 31 Ma, but the timing of intial rifting in the northern sector of the East African rift system had been poorly constrained. The aims of our field, geochronology, and remote sensing studies were to determine the timing and kinematics of rifting in the 3rd arm, the MainEthiopian rift (MER), near its intersection with the southern Red Sea rift. New structural data and 10 new SCLF 40Ar/39Ar dates show that extension in the northernMainEthiopian rift commenced after 11 Ma, more than 17 My after initial rifting in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The triple junct
