The illustrations created by Rafael López bring diverse characters to children’s books and he works to produce and promote books that reflect and honor the lives of all young people. His 2018 picture book release, The Day You Begin written by Jacqueline Woodson was a New York Times #1 Children’s Picture Books Bestseller and the recipient of the 2019 Jane Addams Children’s Book Award. Just Ask! Be Different, Be Brave, Be You, written by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor focuses on differently abled kids working together to create a garden. The book is a #1 New York Times Children’s Picture Books Bestseller and won the American Library Association's 2020 Schneider Family Book Award. Rafael López (born August 8, 1961, in Mexico City, Mexico)[1] is an internationally recognized illustrator[2] and artist.[3] To reflect the lives of all ung people, his illustrations bring diverse characters to children's books.[4] As a children's book illustrator, he has received three Pura Belpré Award medals from the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), and REFORMA in 2020 for Dancing Hands: How Teresa Carreño Played the Piano for President Lincoln,[5]Drum Dream Girl in 2016 and Book Fiesta! in 2010.[6] He created the National Book Festival Poster[7] for the Library of Congress and was a featured book festival speaker at this event.[8]
His book illustrations are the recipient of the American Library Association Schneider Family Book Award,&# • Rafael López illustrated New York Times bestsellers Just Ask! (by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor) and The Day You Begin (by Jacqueline Woodson).
