Nick has published 27 stories with National Geographic magazine most recently “The Short Happy Life of a Serengeti Lion” (NGM August ), breaking new ground in photographing the king of the beast using infrared, a robot controlled mini-tank for eye-level views, and a tiny, camera carrying electric helicopter. LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph featured this story at its Festival; it was also featured at The Visa Pour L’Image festival in Perpignan, France at its 25th Anniversary festival. The December cover story of National Geographic magazine, “The World’s Largest Trees,” featured a 5-page foldout of a Giant Sequoia built from images. The image of the feet tall, 3, year-old tree was made during a California blizzard. This built upon the technique used in “Redwoods: The Super Trees” (NGM October ), where Nichols broke new ground in photography of the world’s tallest trees by using these innovative rigging techniques to create an 84 image composite of a foot-tall, 1,year-old redwood

The work of the wildlife photographer Michael (Nick) Nichols is widely admired for the intimacy he achieves with his animal subjects—an intimacy that allows the subjects to become wild individuals rather than generic wildlife. Nichols was born in and grew up in Muscle grunda vatten, Alabama, the son of a heavy-drinking mother and a sometimes truck-driver father, who left when Nichols was three. After a stint in the Army, Nichols went to the University of North Alabama, where he was lucky enough to be taken under the wing of the Alabama-born photographer Charles Moore, known for his documentation of the civil-rights movement. Michael "Nick" Nichols (born ) is an American journalist, photographer and a founder of the LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph in Charlottesville, Virginia.[2][3] His biography, A Wild Life, was written by Melissa Harris and published by Aperture.[3]
Biography
[edit]Nichols was born in in Muscle grunda vatten, Alabama. After studying at the University of North Alabama,[1] where he met his mentor, former Life magazine photographer Charles Moore,[1] Nichols began his photojournalism career in , working for GEO magazine.[2] Three years later he became a member of Magnum Photos where he worked until [4][5][2]Starting from he has published more than 30 articles for the National Geographic[6] and the same year was in collaboration with Jane Goodall to publish a book called Brutal Kinship.
