    Anton van Leeuwenhoek (October 24, –August 30, ) invented the first practical microscopes and used them to become the first person to see and describe bacteria, among other microscopic discoveries. Indeed, van Leeuwenhoek's work effectively refuted the doctrine of spontaneous generation, the theory that living organisms could spontaneously emerge from nonliving matter. His studies also led to the development of the sciences of bacteriology and protozoology.

      Anton or Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was born on October 24, in the city of Delft. His mother, Margaretha Bel van den Berch, was a brewer. His father, whose name was Philips Antonisz, was a basket maker. Anton's father, sadly, died when Anton was only 5 years old. Anton was an unlikely scientist because of the family that he had came from. In , Anton started his own successful drapery business. He was a tradesman, scientist, and was very skilled at grinding lenses.  He started to make simple microscopes and observed with them. He went to a school in Warmond, but he didn't receive higher education or university degrees after that.
